Do I need to know how to swim?

No, swimming in the waterfalls is not mandatory! You can join us and have a great time anyway. There are also spot where you can go inside of the water without the need to swim.

What kind of clothes shall I take?

It is vital that your clothes are well adjusted to the weather. Our national park reaches temperatures of about 35º/40º in the summer and 0º/5º in the winter.

In the summer we advise the use of light clothing, hat and sunscreen as well as comfortable walking shoes. No specific hiking shoes are required, but the use of flip-flop, sandals and open footwear is not advised due to safety reasons. Please do not forget swimming equipment and towel!

In the winter the days are cold, so warm clothes are advised. In case of rainfall predictions, we recommend raincoats and a change of clothes just in case. Even in the winter it is possible to go in some hot water spots, so… please bring your swimming equipment and towel as well!

How difficult is the hike?

Providing small group experiences allows us to adapt a little bit the difficulty of our hike. In most cases, the hiking periods are small and most of the big connections are made by motorized vehicle. You only have one day to enjoy the park, so we try to make it as agile as possible!

How difficult is the hike?

The hike has approximately 8 km (5 mi) and a big set of stairs right on the beginning (around 250 stairs) that provides a great view from the top! This hike is considered to be of medium/high difficulty, depending on the weather conditions.

I know that this region is know by its meat. But I do not like / cannot eat meat. Do you have alternatives?

Yes, we always have non-meat alternatives on our tours!

I want to experience the Douro Valley in an alternative way, but I would still like to visit the vineyards and taste Port. Should I join you?

Yes! We know that most visitors to the Douro Valley want to taste Port wine and to learn more about its production, so, we always stop at a Port Wine vineyard where we relax a bit, learn more about the wine and go for a taste!

Can I buy wine during the tour?

Yes, throughout the tour we go by several places where is possible to buy Port Wine. When you stop at the vineyard you will also have the possibility to buy directly from the producer.

Am I going out fishing in this experience?

No, the experience does not include fishing. If the weather and ocean conditions allow it, you will be able to see the local fisherman arrive from their endeavor at the ocean! They come to shore in small boats (two fishermen per boat) and you can get a close look to the catch of the day. For safety and health reasons, only fishermen are allowed aboard the licensed fishing boats.

Are you 100% sure that I will be able to see the fishermen arrive at the beach?

On the day before the tour the fishermen inform us if they are planning on going out to the ocean or not (depending on the ocean and weather conditions). If we are told that the fishermen, you not go to the ocean we will let you know about that fact ASAP.

In those cases, we generally visit the fishermen village and observe the maintenance care that boats, fishing nets and materials are taking place.

We kindly remind our guests that our goal is not to influence the local lifestyle and we try not to turn these traditions into a tourist show. It can happen that once we get to the fishermen village we are informed that they decided not to go to the ocean due to a last-minute circumstance and we must accept and understand that that is just how it goes.

Someone in our group does not like to eat fish. Are there any alternatives?

Yes, we can provide alternative food with no problem!

It is my first time Canyoning. May I join you?

Yes. We have more than one river where canyoning can be done near Porto. Besides, within each river there are several routes that can be chosen to adapt the difficult to our guests previous experiences.

What should I bring?

We kindly ask you to bring underwear to wear under the wetsuit. Towel and sunscreen are also advised!

In case you decide not to rent special canyoning boots, please remember to bring shoe wear that can firmly attach to the foot and that can be used to walk in hard terrain and underwater.

Do you make pictures/videos of the activity?

At the moment we cannot guarantee that we will have a GoPro (or similar) available on the day of the tour.

In most of the days, the guides have recording devices with them and will pass on all the footage to you at the end of the activity.

We do not guarantee this situation so please feel free to bring your own recording gear (waterproof and shockproof). Detours is not responsible for any damage/lost of the guest personal recording device.
